One on One Doubles History

 ONE-ON-ONE DOUBLES FACT SHEET 

  • ONE-ON-ONE DOUBLES is the crosscourt serve-and-volley Singles game including the doubles alley. Players are required to serve-and-volley on both first and second serves or there is a loss of point. Half volleys are allowed. Players receive a two-point bonus for winning volleys and overheads, hit out of the air, the opponent cannot touch.
  • One-On-One Doubles Tournament Events can be played with two players or four players per court, based on draw size and number of courts available. The tournaments are fan-friendly — they include music and encourage cheering and coaching.
  • One-On-One Doubles showcases world-class, serve-and-volley Tennis rarely seen at today’s professional tournaments.
  • One-On-One Doubles is the first alternative tennis format and competitive game to Singles and Doubles since the inception of Tennis in the 1870s.
  • Tournaments are half-day events usually lasting 4 hours. Live music often accompanies One-On-One Doubles Events for its round-robin portion of the event. Piped in music is played during the tournament’s single elimination Quarterfinal to Final Rounds.
  • One-On-One Doubles Tournaments have been played as part of ATP, USTA, USPTA and ITA National Events.

FACT SHEET -TIMELINE  

  • Founded by former Harvard Coach Ed Krass in 2003, One-On-One Doubles Tournaments started in 2004 with USTA sanctioning. Coach Krass published his One-On-One Doubles Instructional & Tournament Video, for USTA, USPTA, PTR and ITA Coaches and professionals, in 2004. 
  • One-On-One Doubles was played as part of the $150,000 ATP CHALLENGER in Sunrise, Florida in 2008 and 2009. Austrian Stefan Koubek, formerly ranked in the ATP’s top 30 Singles, won the 2008 Tournament and German player, Christopher Kas, formerly ranked in the ATP’s top 40 Doubles, won the 2009 tournament. Both events hosted live music afterparties. 
  • Four One-On-One Doubles Tournament Events, with live music, were hosted at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2017. Jared Palmer, Wimbledon Doubles Champion in 2001, won the 2009 event. Ernests Gulbis, ranked as high as #10 ATP Singles, competed in this event, as well. 
  • One-On-One Doubles Legends Tournament, held in Ocala, FL in 2012, was televised on Tennis Channel. Players competing were Johan Kriek, Murphy Jensen, Tim Wilkinson and Mikael Pernfors (Champion). 
  • Two Professional One-On-One Doubles Tournament Events were televised on NESN and FOX SPORTS FLORIDA TV Networks in 2017. Emilio Sanchez, winner of over 40 ATP Doubles Titles, captured the Legends event with a 7-6 win over Luke Jensen. Andrei Daescu, former ATP Doubles star, won the other TV event. 
  • The $15,000 Florida One-On-One Doubles Championships, held at the St. Petersburg Tennis Center in May of 2022, was televised seven times on BALLY SPORTS FLORIDA SUN during the summer of 2022. TV announcers were LUKE JENSEN & JIMMY ARIAS.   • One-On-One Doubles was played as a kickoff event, Sunday, Oct 23, 2022 at the $60,000 Women’s Mercer Tennis Classic. 20 WTA/ITF players competed for $5000 in prize money in a single elimination, fast four set tournament. Argentinian NADIA PODOROSKA won the tournament. Nadia was the 2020 French Open Singles Semifinalist and 2021 French Open Doubles Semifinalist.
